It is easy to praise the technical achievements of this film, but those achievements would be empty without Andy. Caesar is not a character that is dependent on human forms of expression to deliver the emotion of the character: despite the lack of any human gestures, and maybe two or three words of human speech Caesar is a fully realized character, not human, and not quite ape; this is no Lassie and this is no Roger Rabbit, it is the creation of an actor doing something that I dare say no other actor could have done at this moment.

On the most recent report card my son received a lower grade in P.E. than he had the previous report card. Upon inquiring about it, the teacher told me it was because he has a hard time going less than 100% & dominates the other kids. She said “When it comes to physical play & P.E. he’s the Alpha Male in a class of competitive boys”. I have to be honest, its pretty hard to be upset about that. Excellence, determination, competitiveness > straight A’s in P.E. I’m very happy to hear that he wants to play hard & win. He’s not perfect but this is pretty cool.

P.S.

I’m not saying that its ok for him to break the rules or be a jerk. I want him to succeed while also helping others succeed. So delete your angry “You’re encouraging your son to be a bully… Typical male-chauvinist… You probably listen to Mark Driscoll sermons… I bet you make your wife submit to you…” emails. I’ve heard it all before. Yes we do still live in a world where people win & lose. The sooner kids understand that the better off they’ll be & the better attitudes they’ll have when they win AND when they lose.

Logical progression. 20 years ago when I was in Youth Ministry we were called CEO’s and Managers and told to model our ministries after business if we wanted them to grow.

Hogwash.

My youth group went from about 12 down to 4-5. God grew it to nearly 20 (not bad for the small church I was at) not because I “managed” my ministry but because I taught the Word and hopefully discipled my students.

It wasn’t a “Plan” that grew the ministry it was God and His mercy and grace.

I am in a “Profession” and I am a “professional”…I’m a licensed pilot and THAT is my industry!

I just received an email from a youth ministry organisation, Simply Youth Ministry (SYM), encouraging me to check out their “ministry partner. It was a promo for Youth Speaker U. I can’t tell you how disappointed I was in its content. It was ridiculous. In the promo video I heard the speaker refer to youth ministry as “our industry” several times. I’m in ministry, not an industry, I’m not working on “projects” I’m trying to disciple believers, & I don’t consider it a “business”, its a calling to lay your life down for. Its not about money, or exposure, or success, or making a living. Its about dying to yourself so Christ can be lifted up. Unfortunately too many, like Youth Ministry U don’t feel that way. Very sad. For a more Biblical view of ministry I refer you to this: Brothers, We Are Not Professionals by John Piper. I hope that SYM will again start focussing on Ministry but if they choose not to, at least they could have the honesty to rename their organisation, Simply Youth Industry.
